Is It Dry Skin or Dehydrated Skin? How to Find Out

Your skin feels tight, itchy and it’s flakey and you think you have dry skin.. but instead it could just be that you are dehydrated.

To have dry skin is different than having dehydrated skin.

HOW TO TELL IF YOU HAVE DRY SKIN

Dry skin is a skin type: it’s a type of skin that doesn’t have enough oils - it always looks matte, with skin patches and with your pores invisible. It’s mostly genetic, determined by age or hormones.

Aging is another important factor: the skin in fact is less effecting in producing sebum.

HOW TO TELL IF YOU HAVE DEHYDRATED SKIN

Dehydrated skin can look very similar to dry skin - with a few key differences: it’s a skin that doesn’t have enough water: it tends to look dull, with no luminosity and irritation.

Wrinkles and fine lines appear deeper when your skin is dehydrated because there isn’t as much water in your skin to keep it looking healthy.

CAUSES OF DEHYDRATED SKIN

Here are some of the most common skincare mistakes that you could be doing leading to dehydrated skin.

1. TOO MUCH SKIN EXFOLIATION

Exfoliating is very important for healthy looking skin  - it helps to remove any dead skin cells, excess sebum adding a radiant glow to the skin. However, if used too often, it can be causing dehydration.

Over-exfoliating your skin, you cause damage to the moisture barrier and prevent it from holding on to water as effectively, causing skin to dehydrate and causing skin flakes.

2. YOU’RE NOT UTILIZING MOISTURIZER

By skipping hydrating your skin after cleansing, you are not allowing your skin to hold onto any water and keep it in your skin.

As a result, your skin tends to dehydrate rather quickly - and this leads to an unpleasant, tight feeling: common sign of dehydration.

3. YOUR BODY WASH IS TOO HARSH

Your skin isn't supposed to feel tight, dry and squeaky right after you shower. Opting for a gentle cleanser is ideal. Check the ingredient list when you buy a body wash or soap and avoid those with surfactants like SLS, too harsh on your skin. Prioritize plant based oils cleansers with natural ingredients.
